Ten Insights into Ghanaian Culture: #9 – Ghanaian Pride in Hard Work

In Ghana, hard work is not just something you do, it is something you boast about, something you wear proudly on your sleeve, and something you measure yourself and others by. For example, if asked about a new employee, one might respond that he or she is a hard-worker. Friends asking about so-and-so’s children might be told that they are very hard-workers. And teachers asked about their children’s performance may (or may not) hear that their child is very hardworking!

To call someone hardworking is a great compliment indeed. Conversely, to be called lazy is an epic disgrace and humiliation. You definitely don’t want to be called that. So, dear visitors to Ghana, it is in your best interest to behave accordingly.
