The Best Road Trip in the Maritimes

1 August, 2019   The best road trip in the Maritimes in Eastern Canada is definitely the route between New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (PEI), and Nova Scotia – Canada’s Maritime provinces. All three provinces are surrounded by water and connected by the Trans-Canada Highway, ensuring that the majority of your trip is in full […]

Prince Edward Island: The Anne of Green Gables Pilgrimage

26 June, 2017     Prince Edward Island (PEI) has been on my bucket list for a very long time. So, in 2015, when I finally decided to make the trip happen, I was psyched. Particularly since, for me, as for many others around the world who grew up reading Anne of Green Gables, PEI […]

The dark and gloomy fall weather plaguing the Northern hemisphere these past few weeks seems an appropriate time to bust out and love on the glorious colours of Ghanaian fabric. It's a bit of a mystery why falling temperatures, cold rain, and moody grey skies drive people to don their darkest clothes, dark coats and jackets, dark handbags and briefcases.... In a world that is already deprived of colour, wouldn't you rather add a little more light to the mix and wrap yourself and others around you in the beauty of what could be and, in fact, what is? Traditional Ghanaian #kente cloth and Holland wax print for the win! ✌🌻😇
🌟
🌟
🌟
Drop a 💛 in the comments if ya feel me! Double 💛💛 if ya feel me AND already own some of this fabric.

There's so much diversity underpinning the fabric of Ghanaian culture. Like the fact that the three drinks set up at this table, in traditional calabash style, are typical of Northern Ghana and barely known in the south as you approach the national capital region. The three drinks, from left to right, are called #sobolo #asana and #lamugine - they are different flavours of yummy, typically served with ice, and totally refreshing in the summertime...or all year long if you're living in a tropical country. The #NorthernRegion itself is so distinctive, with its arid climate, desertic landscape, rich #Hausa culture, and majority muslim population. You can read more about the Northern Region of Ghana and the special contribution it makes to the multicultural landscape of Ghana in my "Top Ten Things to Do in Ghana: Multi-Regional Edition" guide - link in bio!
.
.
And did you know that the cloth the calabashes sit on top of is kente cloth, which is used by the African diaspora around the world to symbolize African heritage and pride but was actually invented in the #Ashanti Region of Ghana and continues to be woven by expert weavers on giant looms to this day? The other day on Instagram, I saw a blogger from Trinidad refer to a kente-patterned #waxprint as "kitenge" and I did a double take. And then of course I had to research it to make sure it wasn't just a typo. It wasn't. I had a good chuckle about that one.

Happy Sunday! And happy Father's Day to all the dads out there (though I'm of the opinion that EVERY day should be Father's Day, and celebrated as such). In Ghana, Father's Day doesn't exist, though like other Western celebrations it's been catching on little by little. Frankly, Ghanaian dads don't care much about being fussed over on Father's Day. But they'll take their hugs. Give them a hug every day of the year and not just today, eh?
🐣
🐣
You know what else doesn't need an excuse to be celebrated in Ghana? The national flag (featured here, front & centre). For this 62-year-young country, the red, gold, and green and the black star in the centre are very deliberate and each represents a crucial element of Ghanaian identity. In the same vein, the national football team, who are the pride and joy of this soccer-crazy country, are named the #BlackStars - after that star in the middle ⚽ ⚽

Anyone know what this meal is?
👐
👐
It's a specialty of the Ga-Adangbe people from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, typically both served in one terracotta bowl (see my Ghana Facebook album via the #linkinbio), and it MUST be eaten with your fingers. To eat this meal with a spoon would be regarded with horror (though tourists may be forgiven) and the experienced traveller could show off their digital dexterity by expertly wielding little segments of the vegetable ball on the right as a spoon to scoop up the soup on the left, thereby integrating the flavours of the #abenkwan or #nkatinkwan or #akukonkwan (or insert your soup of choice; "nkwan" simply means "soup") into the hot stretchy fibres of the yellow ball, thereby creating a whole unique flavour, before the perfect pairing continues its journey within the welcoming mouth of the diner and down into the comforting depths of their belly.
👐
👐
Welcome to fufu.

Want to know what pairs REALLY well with #jollofrice ? 👉 Plantains. Glorious plantains. Delicious, plump, golden hued, crispy edged, soft centred sweet plantains. 😛
🍴
🍴
Now, there are so many ways to prepare plantains through all its stages of maturation. There are about a million recipes for unripe plantains, a million more for ripe ones, and even several for overripe (half rotten) ones. Not to bang on about it like Bubba did in Saving Private Ryan, but there's boiled green plantains, green plantain chips, roasted half-ripe plantains, roasted ripe plantains, boiled ripe plantains, mashed plantains, fried ripe plantains, plantain fufu, plantain and cassava, tatale (plantain patties), plantain cake (aka banana bread), plantain pudding...and the list goes on.
🍴
🍴
There is great regional diversity in Ghanaian cuisine, and plantains are more popular outside of the National Capital Region of Greater Accra, and take centre stage more in places such as the Central Region - the capital of which is Cape Coast.
