Africa—the origin of humanity, the open-air museum of ancient history, the treasure trove of natural resources, the pearl of Mother Earth—is not a country. It is a continent. The second biggest and the second most populous continent, after Asia, with 54 countries, 2 states with limited recognition, and 9 territories. In sub-Saharan Africa, the Gold Coast was the first country to gain Independence. In 1957, it broke away from British colonial rule to form the modern, independent republic of Ghana.
