Finnish Food: A Finlandia Forte

12 May, 2012 It’s often said, in matters of love, that the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, if I may stretch the adage a bit, the best way to reach the heart of Finland and fall in love with it is through its cuisine. Finnish cuisine is Finland’s most […]

Can you spot the snow dog? This show sculpture ti Can you spot the snow dog? This show sculpture tickles me because of reflects the typical good cheek-ahem-humor of the average Québécois during this coronavirus pandemic. You see, Québec is on lockdown from January 10 to February 8, 2021, due to escalating COVID-19 cases and increasingly dire scenarios in hospitals and clinics across the province. Non-essential businesses are closed and there is a curfew from 20h to 5h. The only exceptions for breaking the curfew are made for people going to work (a justificative letter from their employer is required) and people WALKING THEIR DOGS. Get it!? Eh ben là - c'était ben correct de construire un bonhomme de neige et...un bonchien de neige...pour refléter la réalité actuelle, quand même, non? 😄
I love a fresh snowfall. ❄ That is all. Happy I love a fresh snowfall. ❄ That is all. Happy 2021 IG fam!
May this be your year of sustained growth, unlearning, and gratitude. 💫❤
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all of you, and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all of you, and thank you for following along on The Travelling Sociologist this year. Whether you're Christian or religious or celebrating or not, I hope this session brings you some measure of peace in an exceptionally turbulent year, kindness in a world that can often be cruel, and above all good health - the most valuable thing you'll ever own. From the people of Montréal, Québec, who not only invented poutine in 1967 but have now also invented the Poutine Christmas edition 🤣 I bid you all a very happy and restful holiday season. Bonnes fêtes! xo
How is everyone feeling about the U.S. elections s How is everyone feeling about the U.S. elections so far? I'll admit, I'm on edge... anxious, ignoring the news updates, disappointed already by the report of uncounted/unsent mail-in ballots, mad, hopeful, faithful that good American values will prevail, doubtful, and everything in-between. Whew, what a day. What a week! What a YEAR. I realized that I forgot to post my Halloween photos, so here goes. Swipe left to distract your mind from worrying about the U.S. elections. #elections2020 #votehimOUT #heyheyhohoTrumphasGOTtoGO✌🏾🇺🇲
We will always fail ourselves... ...if we don't l We will always fail ourselves... ...if we don't look to nature for lessons on how to live or lives. The answers are there. Life. Death. Growth. Stagnancy. Beauty. Ugliness. The relativity of purity and perfection and superiority and dominance and submission. The food chain. The cycle of seasons. Unity. Separation. Commonness. Uniqueness. Night and day. Darkness and light. The value of ALL that inhabit the earth. Isn't it crazy to think that no matter how diverse we are as humans, no matter our life's journeys, no matter who we are or what we look like or what we've done with our lives, we all see the same blue sky. Let that sink in for a moment. We all look up and see the same dang gorgeous blue sky from wherever the heck in the world we stand. Tell me where in the world you're reading this post from today!?
I'll go first: Montréal, Québec, in Canada!
In a world full of followers... ...dare to stand In a world full of followers... ...dare to stand out and stand up to lead. It will not be easy, but if you persevere, it will be rewarding. In Montreal culture, fall time is typically road trip time, and people flock out of the city to hike on nearby mountains and view the fall foliage. This year is a bit different, due to the #coronavirus pandemic. But fortunately we have beautiful foliage all around the city too. I especially love the colours on the maple trees. The trees themselves are tall and majestic. But their fall leaves too are broad and large and take up space with their brilliant, unique colours. Isn't that the way we all should live our lives? Imagine what the world would be if the maple tree in the fall mimicked the grass and hid its shine and cowered under the sky, preferring to be like the others rather than to make its beautiful, unique contribution to the world. And maple leaf don't give a feef what the haters think. It's just out there, doing maple. So, my dear followers, what is YOUR brilliant thing that you're hiding from the world?
Days like these won't be around for much longer.. Days like these won't be around for much longer.... More and more, the change of seasons teaches me, reminds me, to be here, now. To be still. To take note of all that is normally taken for granted. The rustle of leaves. The gurgle of flowing water. The chirping of birds in trees. The crunch of sneakers stepping through grass. The tadpoles. The worms. The clouds. The stars in the sky, reminding us of our relativity to all things animate and inanimate in this universe. To things past, and things of the future, anchored in this moment, here, now. I note the things that are absent, and the things that are to come, too. Stinging mosquitoes and freezing rain. Barbecue cookouts and Christmas carols. Fall has fallen, but our conscience must rise to meet it, our minds keeping perspective on how fleeting all things, good and bad, really are. Drop your favorite emoji for fall in the comments! Mine is 🧣
